Our rolling clinic is perfect for the non-rolling kayaker or for those looking to brush up on their rolling skills. This course is great for those with some prior experience. Participants must have some formal kayak instruction, including strong bracing skills.

Women’s Instruction (Taught by women for women)

Women’s 101 Quick Start

The Quick Start 101 course is a great introduction to the basics of kayaking. The Woman’s 101 Quick Start boasts all the advantages of our traditional Quick Start course, but this time it’s just for the ladies! Come get your feet wet and see if kayaking is something you will enjoy as you are taught by women alongside other women. During this half day course we will cover a great deal of skills, such as boat entry and exit, basic paddling strokes, on-water safety and how to launch your kayak.

Just like the traditional Quick Start course, this woman’s only session can be taken in any type of kayak (sit-on-top, mid-size, recreational, or full-size). No prior experience is necessary to participate in this course, just come ready to learn and have fun!

Women’s 102 Rescues

This class is great for after you learn the basic rescues from Kayaking 101. This course is structured much like our traditional rescue 102 course, but is just for the ladies! Join our ACA Certified Coastal Kayak instructors to increase your rescue repertoire as you are taught by women among women. During this class you will learn rescue techniques such as the reenter and roll (or paddle-float reenter & roll), towing, All-in, Scoop, and Hand-of-God. We’ll also simulate some real-life scenarios so you can practice “under pressure.” In order to take this class attendance to the kayaking 101 class is required, or permission from the instructor.

Kids and Family

Family Fun

You’ll love learning to paddle with your kids! Our Family Fun course is designed to be both a great learning experience and a fun morning out on the water for parents and kids who are at least eight years old. In single kayaks, we’ll cover essential strokes, paddling fundamentals and safety considerations. On-water games and activities will engage your entire pack! Come get wet and enjoy a real taste of this fast growing sport. Our goal is to excite your entire family about kayaking!

1 day Kidz Kayak Kamp

Our Kayaking 1 day Kamp is for kids 9-14 years of age that emphasizes fundamental kayak skills, safety and FUN! This full-day clinic uses games and water-play activities to engage and expand the skills of young paddlers.

3 day Kidz Kayak Kamp

Our 3 day Kidz Kayak Kamp is designed especially for youths, 11-15. The three days cover paddling fundamentals, on-water safety, and a variety of paddling skills. The primary emphasis is on having fun and learning through games, on-water activities, and teamwork. We will teach a wide variety of paddle strokes, solo and group rescues and even paddle some double kayaks during the course of the Kamp. Much like our 1 day Kidz Kayak Kamp, it is about engaging and expanding the skills of young paddlers. We love sharing our enthusiasm of the sport with kids!

Workshops

Fast Track workshop

Looking to get your learning on the fast track in a weekend? This is the ideal course for the athletic beginner who really wants to push themselves or an experienced paddler looking to brush up on their skills and learn some additional technique. The content of this two day course is Kayaking 102 and Kayaking 103. Ability to exit with a sprayskirt or Kayaking 101 is a prerequisite for the course.

Sit On Top Kayak Surfing workshop

Tired of flat water paddling or just want to try something different? Kick it up a notch and give surf kayaking a try! Atlantic Beach provides the perfect setting, with gentle surf and a sandy beach for landings. Sit-on-top kayaks are safe, fun and can be paddled nearly everywhere. No previous kayak experience is necessary, just a sense of adventure! The course covers surf etiquette, landings, reading waves and reentry. You will definitely get wet, and you’ll likely be hooked on kayak surfing after giving it a try!

Kayaking 102

This class is a combination of all the classes we offer under our Kayaking 102 series. We cover self and assisted rescues, as well as Strokes and maneuvers ll. This class is geared towards someone with some kayaking experience. You will need a prerequisite of Kayaking 101 or instructor’s approval to participate.

Kayaking 103

This class is a combination of all the classes we offer under our Kayaking 103 series. We will cover kayak rolling, crossings, rescues, wind, tide, and ocean surfing. This class was designed for someone interested in advancing there paddling skills. You will need Kayaking 102 as a prerequisite for this course, as well the ability to safely preform a wet exit with a sprayskirt.

Wilderness Medicine Certifications

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

If you plan to spend time in the backcountry you need to be prepared. Fast paced and hands-on, this two or three-day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel and work in the outdoors. This course is pre-approved by such organizations as: the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other governmental agencies. It may also be used for wilderness medicine recertification by those with previous training. This course may be used to re-certify Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness Advanced First Aid and Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. You must possess a valid certification from WMI, SOLO or WMA to re-certify through this course. Participants using the WFA to re-certify their WFR need to pass both a written and a practical test.

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

This is a nationally recognized program that trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists. This course is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of your time will be spent completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge your decision making abilities. The WMI Adult & Child CPR is included in this course. The Wilderness First Responder course is pre-approved for 70 hours of EMT Continuing Education Hours (CEH) by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS).For active members of the Wilderness Medical Society, this course has been approved for up to 59.5 hours of credit (27 core and 32.5 elective) towards a Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM). There is an additional fee of $15 for students requesting these credits.
